Today, April 29 marks the 100th day of Donald Trump’s second term in office. The nation has found itself in a turmoil of Executive orders, tariffs, immigration laws, and Florida has found itself at the heart of many of these changes.
From immigration raids to curriculum changes, Florida’s government which aligns closely with Trump has been quick to adopt his directives. So, what does that mean for the everyday Floridian?
Florida’s Role in Trump’s Inner Circle
To start, in just the first 100 days, Trump selected several Floridians for key roles in his administration. The most notable ones being Marco Rubio (Florida Senator) has been appointed the Secretary of State, Susie Wiles (Florida political consultant) is now White House Chief of Staff, and Pam Bondi (Florida state Attorney General from 2011-2019 ) is now US Attorney General.
All in all, these appointments led to two congressional vacancies which were filled with Republicans.
Key Legislations in Florida
Operation Tidal Wave:
Operation Tidal wave is one of the most aggressive immigration crackdowns in US history and Florida is the launchpad. This operation resulted in the arrest of almost 800 undocumented immigrants in just a few days following its launch on the 21st of April. Additionally, all 67 Florida county sheriffs participated.
This operation isn’t just broad, its very severe in its tone and threats. Kris Noem, the Homeland Security Secretary, wrote “This s a warning to all criminal illegal aliens: We’re coming for you,”. Furthermore, it was promised that ICE, DHS, and other state partners will hunt them down, arrest, and deport them.
According to ICE, arrests included MS-13 gang members, rapists, and murderers. Nevertheless, it had harsh criticism due to them mistakenly deporting a 2 year old US citizen.
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America
As many know, Trump has renamed the gulf as a symbolic gesture which reflects nationalist sentiments. On April 15, 2 bills (HB 575 and HB 549) were signed into law by Desantis. These bills will rename the Gulf in all state statutes and educational materials. Some argue that it fosters American identity and pride. On the other hand, people argue it results in unnecessary costs.
Protest Movements-A Public Response
Growing waves of dissent are beginning to form. Since Trump’s second term started, protests have become increasingly prominent in Florida
April 5- “Hands Off” Protests
On April 5, 2025, Florida witnessed a multitude of protests which were part of a nationwide movement against Trump and his policies. These occurred in multiple cities: Miami, Naples, Orlando, Sarasota, and Marathon. They drew participants concerned about educational reforms, immigration laws, and civil liberties.
April 19-Boca Raton
On April 19, hundreds of people gathered in Boca Raton to protest against Trump’s policies regarding education and immigration.
April 26-Daytona Beach Airport Protest
This protest was a direct result of deportation flights. Approximately 70 protesters gathered at Daytona Beach International Airport to voice their opposition on the deportation flights.
All these Protest exemplify a rising wave of youth civic engagement in Florida. These new movements will continue to grow and show the importance of activism in shaping Florida’s future.
